It's only October, but the winter season is officially here and we can't help but get a little bit excited about what the start of the winter season means...a whole load of Christmas markets are fast approaching. Yes, we went there...we mentioned Christmas markets in October!
Although we also appreciate that it's a little too early to start getting into the Christmas groove, there are just so many Christmas festivities to be enjoyed in the area, one does need to start planning early. So for just a few minutes, forget that Christmas is still weeks away, put your planning hat on, and get up to speed on some of the best Christmas markets that Salzburg has to offer.
Some of these do actually start in November, so in our defence, we're not THAT early...
The Historic Christkindlmarkt:
The Christkindlmarkt is one of the most iconic Christmas markets in Salzburg, nestled in the heart of the old town. Originating back in the 15th Century, it holds the title of one of Austria's oldest markets.
With more than 100 stalls, this market is a must-see when visiting the Salzburg Christmas markets. It offers a rich variety of handcrafted gifts, festive ornaments, and delicious local treats. It's the perfect spot to tuck into some traditional Austrian Lebkuchen and a glass of Glühwein whilst taking in the impressive backdrop of the Salzburg castle.
This year, the Salzburg Christkindlmarkt runs from November 20th 2025, until January 1st 2026, so you have plenty of time to enjoy this magical Christmas market!
Mirabellplatz Christmas Market:
The Mirabellplatz Christmas Market is just a short walk from the Old Town, set across from St Andrew's church and with views towards the Mirabell Palace. With a smaller, cosier vibe, this is definitely one for those looking to avoid the bigger crowds of the popular Christkindlmarkt. Running from November 20th until December 31st, 2025, it's another one to add to your Salzburg Christmas market tour!
Hellbrunn Christmas Market:
The Hellbrunn Christmas market is one of our favourite Christmas markets, and we make sure to visit it every Christmas. Located within the grounds of Hellbrunn Palace, it feels like something out of a fairytale. More than 700 conifers are decorated with 10,000 red baubles and fairy lights, and the 24 windows of the Hellbrunn Palace façade are transformed into a giant advent calendar, making it an absolutely magical Christmas market.
The Hellbrunn Christmas market is also a great one for families. It offers face-painting, a Christmas train, grilling sausages over a campfire, and a Christmas post office, where kids can write a letter to "Christkind" or Santa. There are also loads of zoo animals to see, which are sure to keep your little ones entertained!
The Hellbrun Christmas market is open from November 20th until December 24th this year.

Salzburg Fortress Christmas Market:
Another picture-perfect Christmas market in Salzburg is the Salzburg Fortress Christmas market. Although it's small, it packs a punch in terms of festive vibes. Situated in the castle courtyard surrounded by towering medieval walls, it's hard not to get swept up in the magic of Christmas when visiting this Christmas market! Tuck into some goulash and a warm drink, and admire the sparkling lights of the city of Salzburg below. This year, the market is open from November 21st to December 21st, 2025.
